Red Sea Gateway to Potentially Be Closed After Strait of Hormuz

Over the last few days, the US has continuously carried out strikes on Iran. Iran has retaliated by targeting US military bases in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar. Needless to say, tensions have significantly escalated this week.
With no end to fighting in sight, reports have recently come out that Iran has asked Yemen’s Houthi movement to stand ready to close the Red Sea oil route if the US strikes Iranian power infrastructure. For context, a significant amount of Gulf oil has been diverted to the Red Sea route and is currently responsible for about 7% of global energy supplies, especially after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
If this does happen, oil prices might rise even further as this places further constraints on global oil supply chains, fueling further inflation concerns despite June’s CPI and PPI both coming below than market expectations. Rising inflation usually increases rate hike bets which pressures non-yield assets such as gold.
Recap of Yesterday’s US Economic Data

U.S. Retail Sales data delivered a mixed signal on Thursday, with headline Retail Sales meeting expectations while Core Retail Sales disappointed. However, stronger-than-expected Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing data and lower Initial Jobless Claims pointed to a resilient U.S. economy, reinforcing expectations that the Federal Reserve can keep interest rates elevated for longer. Gold fell 0.55% immediately after the data release. Although the economic data was mixed overall, the market appeared to focus on the stronger growth and labor market indicators, supporting the U.S. dollar. Selling pressure intensified after gold broke below the key psychological $4,000 level, triggering additional technical and momentum-driven selling.
