FOMC Minutes Reinforce Expectations for Another Rate Hike

The September FOMC meeting minutes showed that most Fed officials expect another interest rate hike before the end of 2026, mainly to guard against inflation remaining above the Fed’s 2% target. Of the 18 officials who submitted forecasts, 16 projected at least one more hike, although policymakers emphasized that future decisions would remain dependent on incoming economic data and the balance of risks. Officials also noted that the labor market remained close to maximum employment and economic growth had strengthened, while persistent inflation and potential supply shocks remained key concerns.

However, the minutes did not specify when another hike would occur, and more recent inflation data and Fed commentary have reduced expectations for an October move. Meanwhile, officials discussed the sharp rise in Treasury Yields, attributing it to expectations for higher policy rates, strong economic growth, and investment related to artificial intelligence. With the next rate decisions scheduled for October 28 and December 9, markets will continue to closely monitor upcoming inflation and labor-market data for clues on whether the Fed will deliver another hike this year.

Strait of Hormuz Tensions Escalate as Tanker Attacks Rise

Tensions between the US and Iran remained elevated as attacks and attempted attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz reached their highest weekly level since the war began. Between September 28 and October 5, maritime security sources recorded at least 12 attacks involving oil, LNG and LPG tankers, while the US Navy-led Joint Maritime Information Center reported continued drone surveillance, vessel harassment and radio hailing by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. The heightened activity comes as Gulf oil exporters have pushed shipments above pre-war levels, but continued attacks and logistical disruptions are raising concerns over the sustainability of these flows. On October 6, India also reported that 12 crew members were injured after an unknown projectile struck the Panama-flagged oil tanker On Peace while transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

The renewed tensions supported Brent crude oil, which closed 1.25% higher on Wednesday, as markets remained concerned about potential disruptions to one of the world’s most important oil transit routes.
