U.S.-Iran War Peace Deal Hopes Fade

Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump paused Project Freedom, an initiative aimed at ensuring the safe passage of vessels belonging to countries not directly involved in the conflict between the U.S. and Iran through the Strait of Hormuz. The move initially raised hopes for potential diplomatic progress. However, the latest developments suggest otherwise.

The U.S. proposed a deal to Iran last week aimed at ending the conflict. Iran later responded with a counterproposal that President Trump reportedly described as “garbage.” Following the latest developments, Brent Oil CFDs rose approximately 3%, while WTI Crude Oil CFDs gained around 2% from their respective session lows on Monday.

  • If tensions persist or escalate further, both Brent Oil and WTI Crude Oil could remain elevated or potentially move higher due to ongoing concerns over supply disruptions in the region.
  • However, if diplomatic progress resumes and tensions begin to ease, both commodities may face downward pressure as fears surrounding supply risks diminish.

Gold Prices Remain Steady

Despite fading hopes for a peace deal between the U.S. and Iran, gold prices have remained relatively steady this week. As of May 12, 2026, at 1:35 PM GMT+7, gold was trading around $4,703, compared to the week’s opening price of around $4,687. Traders should now closely watch the upcoming meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this week, alongside today’s U.S. CPI release scheduled for 7:30 PM GMT+7, for further direction on gold prices.
