Kevin Warsh’s ECB Forum Remarks Boost Gold

Yesterday, Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh participated in the European Central Bank (ECB) Forum alongside Bank of England (BoE) Governor Andrew Bailey and ECB President Christine Lagarde. At last month’s FOMC press conference, Warsh indicated that he would avoid providing detailed forward guidance on future monetary policy. He maintained that approach during yesterday’s forum, although his comments on inflation still influenced market sentiment.

Warsh noted that “inflation risks have come down” as energy prices have fallen substantially. His remarks are broadly consistent with recent market developments. Since June 17, when the U.S. and Iran signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), both Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude have generally trended lower, helping ease upward pressure on headline inflation.

Nevertheless, inflation remains above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target, with last month’s year-on-year CPI coming in at 4.2%. Warsh reiterated the Fed’s commitment to price stability, stating, “If people thought this central bank was going to be comfortable with an inflation objective above 2%, they would be disappointed.”

Following the forum, gold prices moved higher as markets interpreted Warsh’s remarks as reducing the risk of inflation remaining persistently elevated. If inflation pressures continue to moderate, the Federal Reserve may have greater flexibility to keep interest rates unchanged or eventually begin lowering them, a scenario that is generally supportive of gold prices.

Mixed U.S. Economic Data Has Limited Impact on Gold Ahead of NFP

Yesterday’s U.S. economic data painted a mixed picture of the economy but ultimately had little impact on gold prices, as markets remained focused on today’s Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report.

The ADP Nonfarm Employment Change came in at 98,000, below both the forecast of 118,000 and the previous reading of 122,000, suggesting that private-sector hiring slowed in June. Meanwhile, both the S&P Global Manufacturing PMI and ISM Manufacturing PMI came in slightly below expectations, indicating that the U.S. manufacturing sector continues to face headwinds.

However, the ISM Manufacturing Prices Index remained elevated at 73.0, reflecting that inflationary pressures within the manufacturing sector are still relatively strong despite easing from the previous month’s reading of 82.1.

Despite these mixed results, gold showed little reaction following the data releases, as none of the reports significantly altered market expectations for the Federal Reserve’s next policy move. While the weaker-than-expected ADP Nonfarm Employment Change may provide an early indication that today’s Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report could also come in weaker than expected, the correlation between the two reports is far from perfect, and markets typically place much greater weight on the official NFP data. As a result, investors are likely to remain on the sidelines ahead of today’s U.S. Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report at 7:30 PM (GMT+7). As one of the Federal Reserve’s most closely watched labour market indicators, the NFP report is expected to play a much larger role in shaping interest rate expectations and, consequently, the direction of gold prices.
