Iran Briefly Suspends Talks with U.S. Over Israeli Attacks on Iran

On Monday, Iran temporarily suspended talks with the United States following Israeli strikes in Lebanon. Tehran views any potential ceasefire framework with the U.S. as encompassing broader regional dynamics, including actions by Israel. As a result, the strikes were interpreted as undermining de-escalation efforts, prompting Iran to pause negotiations.

However, Donald Trump later stated on Truth Social that he had spoken with Benjamin Netanyahu and representatives linked to Hezbollah, with both sides agreeing to halt hostilities. He added that discussions with Iran are ongoing, suggesting the suspension may be short-lived.

Oil prices surged on the escalation headlines, reflecting concerns over potential supply disruptions in the region. In contrast, gold prices faced some pressure. This may indicate that inflation concerns—driven by rising energy prices—are reinforcing expectations of tighter monetary policy, which can weigh on non-yielding assets like gold.

Yesterday’s Economic Data

U.S. manufacturing data released yesterday showed a generally positive picture. The ISM Manufacturing PMI came in stronger than expected, signaling continued expansion in the sector, while input prices declined slightly, suggesting easing inflation pressures. However, both gold and oil saw little reaction, as market attention remained focused on geopolitical developments—particularly Iran’s decision to suspend talks with the U.S. following Israeli strikes in Lebanon.
