Oil Rises as Iran Considers Restricting US and Israeli Ships in the Strait of Hormuz

Reports from Fars, a semi-official Iranian news agency, emerged last night stating that a draft bill is currently under review in Iran’s parliament. The proposed legislation would bar US and Israeli ships from passing through the Strait of Hormuz and require hostile countries to provide compensation before being allowed to use the waterway. It would also impose fines of up to 20% of a vessel’s cargo value for violations of the proposed restrictions.

The bill remains under review, and Iran’s parliament has invited specialists to submit recommendations before the draft is finalized.

The proposal contrasts with comments made earlier this week by US President Donald Trump, who said progress was being made toward an agreement with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The provision to charge compensation and impose fines also conflicts with one of the US’s key objectives in the negotiations, which is to prevent Iran from charging tolls or fees on ships transiting the strait.

Following the reports, concerns over potential supply disruptions pushed oil prices higher. As of 9:54 AM (GMT+7), Brent Crude Oil had risen 2.42%, while WTI Crude Oil was up 1.51%.

Gold initially fell 0.67%, likely as higher oil prices renewed concerns that inflation could remain elevated, reinforcing expectations that the Federal Reserve may keep interest rates higher for longer. However, as of 9:58 AM (GMT+7), gold had recovered most of its losses.

US Labor Market Takes Center Stage Ahead of Nonfarm Payrolls

Yesterday’s US Initial Jobless Claims came in at 199K, below the 203K forecast, pointing to continued resilience in the US labor market.

Market attention now turns to today’s US Nonfarm Payrolls report, which is expected to show 88K jobs added. Traders will also be watching Average Hourly Earnings (MoM) and the Unemployment Rate for additional insight into labor market conditions.

If Nonfarm Payrolls come in significantly below expectations, markets may increase expectations for a more dovish Federal Reserve, potentially weakening the US dollar and supporting gold prices. Conversely, a much stronger-than-expected reading could reinforce expectations that interest rates will remain higher for longer, strengthening the US dollar and putting pressure on gold.

Given the importance of today’s employment data, traders should expect heightened market volatility around the release.
