Houthis Announce Maritime Blockade Against Saudi Arabia

Last week, reports emerged that Iran had asked Yemen’s Houthi movement to prepare to close the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The strategic chokepoint connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and has become increasingly important for oil shipments after the Strait of Hormuz was effectively closed amid the escalating US-Iran conflict.

On Monday, the Houthis announced that they would impose a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia in response to what they described as a Saudi blockade of ports and airports in Yemen. While the announcement does not necessarily mean that the Bab al-Mandab Strait has been physically closed, it raises the risk of further disruption to Saudi-linked shipping and energy exports.

If the Houthis begin successfully disrupting shipping through the strait, the resulting supply concerns could push oil prices higher and add to inflationary pressures. This could increase expectations for higher interest rates, which would generally weigh on gold by raising the opportunity cost of holding the non-yielding asset.

Regional Mediators Propose 10-Day Ceasefire to Iran

Despite the escalating tensions, regional mediators have reportedly proposed a 10-day ceasefire to Iran. The proposed pause would provide time for the US and Iran to negotiate a longer-term arrangement regarding the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Axios, the mediation effort involves Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatari envoy Ali Al-Thawadi, Pakistani army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei has confirmed that diplomatic efforts are underway, although he did not provide extensive details about the proposal. It also remains unclear whether US President Donald Trump would agree to another temporary ceasefire without a clear path toward a lasting settlement.

Nevertheless, the push toward a temporary ceasefire has reduced the immediate risk of further escalation and energy-supply disruptions. This helped ease oil prices and inflation concerns at the start of the week. If these de-escalation efforts continue, reduced inflationary pressures could lower expectations for further interest-rate hikes, potentially supporting gold.

However, with tensions still elevated and the Houthi blockade announcement creating a new risk to regional shipping, the outlook for gold remains highly sensitive to developments surrounding both the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
