Labor Market Weakness Triggers Fed Rate Expectation Repricing

U.S. labor market data released last night pointed to signs of cooling employment conditions. The unemployment rate, average hourly earnings, and initial jobless claims all came in broadly in line with expectations. However, the main surprise was in Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP), which printed at 57k versus a forecast of 114k, significantly below expectations. This weaker-than-expected jobs growth led markets to scale back expectations of further Fed tightening this year, as it signals softer momentum in the labor market.

Earlier in the week, the ADP Nonfarm Employment Change, which tracks private-sector job creation, also came in softer at 98k versus 118k expected, reinforcing the view that employment growth is gradually cooling.

It is also worth mentioning that Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh noted at the ECB Forum that inflation risks have eased in recent weeks, supported by declining oil prices following developments around the Iran–U.S. MoU signing. However, he also emphasized that inflation remains above the Fed’s 2% target, with the central bank still committed to bringing it back sustainably to target.

Following the data releases and policy commentary, markets now price in a 53.2% probability of a rate hike in September, down from 66% prior to the data, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.

Gold rose approximately 2.92% following the NFP release, as weaker labor data and lower rate hike expectations supported demand for non-yielding assets.
