Trump Signals Willingness to Negotiate as Mediators Push to Revive U.S.-Iran Nuclear Talks

Geopolitical developments remained in focus after President Donald Trump said yesterday that Iran had recently reached out to the United States. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One as he departed the U.K.’s RAF Mildenhall Air Base, Trump stated that “Iran called a little while ago” and that “they want to make a deal so badly.” His remarks came a day after he declared on Wednesday that the ceasefire MoU with Iran was effectively over following continued military escalation.

Meanwhile, reports emerged yesterday of another round of strikes inside Iran. However, a U.S. official denied that the United States was responsible for the latest attacks. No party has claimed responsibility so far, and Iran has not publicly blamed any specific country.

Despite the renewed military activity, diplomatic efforts are continuing behind the scenes. According to Axios, Qatar, Pakistan, and other regional mediators are working with both sides to de-escalate tensions and revive negotiations on a new nuclear agreement. Sources familiar with the talks said mediators believe meaningful progress had been made during previous rounds of negotiations and are aiming to prevent the existing MoU from collapsing completely.

Following these developments, gold recovered part of its earlier losses as expectations for renewed negotiations helped reduce concerns over prolonged disruptions to global oil supplies. Lower inflation expectations reduced expectations for further Federal Reserve interest rate hikes, providing support for gold prices.

U.S. Labor Market Remains Resilient Despite Last Week’s Weak Nonfarm Payrolls Figure

The latest U.S. economic data presented a mixed picture of the labor market. Initial Jobless Claims fell to 215,000, below the market expectation of 218,000 and down from the previous week’s 217,000, indicating that layoffs remain limited and the labor market continues to show resilience.

The stronger-than-expected jobless claims data comes after last week’s Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report, which showed hiring slowed significantly more than expected. Together, the two reports suggest that while the pace of job creation may be moderating, employers are not yet cutting workers on a large scale.

Overall, the latest data is unlikely to materially change the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook. The resilient labor market supports the Fed’s cautious approach to monetary policy, as policymakers are expected to seek further evidence of broader labor market weakness and easing inflation before considering interest rate cuts.
