Trump is Considering a “Massive Attack” on Iran Ahead of FOMC Meeting

The conflict between the US and Iran has escalated significantly over the past 12 days, with exchanges of fire continuing on a daily basis. In an interview with Axios yesterday, President Trump said he is considering a “massive attack” on Iran, raising concerns that the conflict could escalate even further. The comments came as Iran-backed Houthis reportedly attacked two Saudi Arabian oil tankers in the Red Sea, adding to concerns over the security of key energy shipping routes.

Following the developments, Brent Crude Oil rose above $100 per barrel once again, as markets priced in a greater risk of supply disruptions. If the conflict continues to escalate, oil prices could remain elevated or rise further. This could create additional inflationary pressure, particularly through higher energy costs, at a time when the Federal Reserve is already closely monitoring the inflation outlook.

The latest developments are particularly important ahead of next week’s FOMC meeting. Earlier this month, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh said that inflation risks had eased during the ECB Conference. However, that assessment came as the US-Iran ceasefire agreement was still holding and oil prices had eased. Since then, the ceasefire memorandum of understanding has effectively unraveled, while renewed attacks and threats to energy shipping routes have pushed geopolitical and oil-market risks higher.

This creates a complicated policy environment for the Federal Reserve. A sustained rise in oil prices could increase inflationary pressure and potentially make the Fed more cautious about easing monetary policy.

For gold, the latest developments create two opposing forces. Rising geopolitical tensions generally support gold’s safe-haven appeal, while the possibility of higher inflation and a more hawkish Federal Reserve could push interest-rate expectations, Treasury yields, and the US Dollar higher, creating downward pressure on gold. With the FOMC meeting approaching, the key question will be which factor ultimately dominates: stronger safe-haven demand or renewed concerns over inflation and interest rates.

Preliminary US PMI and New Home Sales to Provide Further Clues on Fed Policy

Later tonight, markets will receive the preliminary US Manufacturing and Services PMI figures, followed by New Home Sales data. The Manufacturing PMI is expected to rise to 54.4 from 53.9, while the Services PMI is forecast to increase slightly to 51.3 from 51.2. New Home Sales are also expected to rise to 609K from 580K.

Stronger-than-expected preliminary PMI figures would signal continued resilience in the US economy and could reinforce expectations that the Federal Reserve will maintain a hawkish stance, particularly as renewed geopolitical tensions have pushed oil prices higher and reignited inflation concerns. This could support the US Dollar and Treasury yields, placing downward pressure on gold. Conversely, weaker-than-expected data could ease concerns over economic strength and reduce expectations for a hawkish Fed, potentially supporting gold. However, with geopolitical tensions continuing to escalate, weaker data could also strengthen gold’s safe-haven appeal, creating additional upside potential for the precious metal.

The New Home Sales data would generally reinforce the same interpretation: a stronger-than-expected reading could support the US Dollar and weigh on gold, while a weaker-than-expected figure could provide support for gold by raising concerns over the strength of the US economy.
