The U.S. has agreed to allow a “core delegation” from Iran, including President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, to attend the UN General Assembly in New York this week. Pezeshkian is expected to arrive in New York ahead of the high-level meetings beginning Tuesday.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has said he would probably be open to meeting Pezeshkian, although there is currently no confirmation that a meeting between the two leaders will take place.
The possibility of diplomatic progress has already affected energy markets. Oil prices fell on September 21 as investors weighed the possibility of U.S.–Iran talks, with reports linking the decline to hopes that diplomacy could help reduce tensions and eventually ease disruptions to regional oil supplies.
With the UN General Assembly continuing through September 28, markets will be watching for any developments toward a meeting or broader negotiations between Washington and Tehran. If diplomatic progress reduces the risk of prolonged conflict and improves the outlook for oil supply, oil prices and inflation expectations could ease, potentially changing expectations for future monetary policy and providing a potentially supportive backdrop for Gold.
