Trump’s Iran Threat Triggers Volatile Gold Price Action

Gold experienced sharp volatility after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to destroy one Iranian bridge or power plant every time Iran attacks a ship in the Strait of Hormuz.

The threat initially pushed gold down by approximately 0.29%, with prices falling to around $4,106 before sharply reversing and rallying toward $4,166.

The initial decline was consistent with the market’s established reaction to rising U.S.–Iran tensions in recent months. Rather than treating geopolitical escalation as immediately bullish for gold, markets have increasingly focused on the potential impact on oil prices. A disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could cause oil prices to rise significantly, increasing inflationary pressures and potentially reducing expectations for Federal Reserve interest-rate cuts. Higher-for-longer interest-rate expectations, rising Treasury yields and a stronger U.S. dollar would generally weigh on gold.

However, gold’s subsequent reversal suggests that markets may have reassessed the implications of Trump’s threat. While the initial reaction focused on the risk of further escalation, the threat could also be interpreted as a deterrent intended to prevent Iran from attacking shipping in the first place. If the threat reduces the probability of a prolonged disruption to the Strait of Hormuz, it could ultimately reduce the expected risk of a sustained oil-price shock and its associated inflationary impact.

The price action therefore highlights the complexity of the current market environment. Gold’s reaction was not simply a case of “higher geopolitical tensions equals higher gold prices.” Instead, the market appeared to initially price the potential inflationary and interest-rate consequences of escalation before later reassessing whether the threat could deter the event most likely to generate a major oil shock. Additionally, the $4,000 level is also an important technical and psychological support zone. So far, gold has shown strong reactions whenever it has approached this area, which may have been another factor supporting the subsequent rebound.

Japan Warns of Decisive Action as USD/JPY Trades Above 163

The risk of another Japanese foreign-exchange intervention is becoming an increasingly important factor for markets as USD/JPY trades above 163. The pair recently reached 163.24, its weakest level for the yen in around four decades. Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama reiterated that the government remains ready to take “decisive action” in the foreign-exchange market if necessary, although she declined to comment on specific exchange-rate levels.

The warnings come after Japan spent a record ¥11.7 trillion, equivalent to approximately $72 billion, intervening in the currency market between late April and early May. If another intervention occurs, the immediate reaction would likely be a sharp decline in USD/JPY as Japanese authorities sell U.S. dollars and buy yen. A sudden strengthening of the yen could also create volatility across global markets as traders adjust their positions in response to the sharp movement in USD/JPY.

The impact on the U.S. dollar and gold could be more complicated. A stronger yen would generally mean a weaker dollar against the yen, which could provide some support for gold. However, if the intervention triggers broader risk aversion, investors could increase demand for the U.S. dollar as a safe-haven asset, potentially limiting gold’s gains. Therefore, the impact on gold will likely depend on whether the intervention leads to a broader decline in the U.S. dollar or instead triggers a wider risk-off move that strengthens demand for the dollar.
