Trump’s NATO Remarks and Renewed U.S. Strikes Pressure Gold

Gold came under pressure after President Trump adopted a tougher stance on Iran during the NATO summit, declaring that the ceasefire memorandum of understanding (MoU) was effectively over following Iran’s reported attacks on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz earlier this week. Trump also stated that he no longer wished to engage with Iran diplomatically, although he added that he does not expect the situation to escalate into a full-scale war.

At the same time, the United States continued its military campaign against Iran for a second consecutive day, after carrying out strikes along the country’s southern coast, including Bandar Abbas—home to Iran’s largest commercial port and key naval facilities on the Strait of Hormuz. The renewed military action heightened concerns over potential disruptions to global oil supplies.

Oil prices rose following Trump’s remarks and the continued military operations, fueling concerns that higher energy costs could keep inflation elevated. This prompted investors to increase expectations that the Federal Reserve may need to keep interest rates higher for longer, reducing the appeal of non-yielding assets such as gold. As a result, gold fell 1.42% as of 10:12 AM (GMT+7) on 9 July.

FOMC Minutes Reinforce the Fed’s Higher-for-Longer Stance

The latest FOMC meeting minutes reinforced that the Federal Reserve remains cautious about easing monetary policy. While policymakers unanimously voted to keep the federal funds rate unchanged, discussions revealed that inflation continues to be the Committee’s primary concern, with officials highlighting persistent price pressures from tariffs, energy costs, and strong AI-driven investment.

Notably, a few participants stated there was a case for raising interest rates, although they ultimately supported leaving rates unchanged at this meeting. At the same time, many officials indicated that rates could remain at or even above current levels if inflation proves more persistent than expected, while emphasizing that future policy decisions will remain dependent on incoming economic data.

Despite the relatively hawkish tone of the minutes, the release had little impact on gold prices, as markets had largely anticipated the Fed’s cautious stance. With no significant policy surprises, investors continue to look toward upcoming inflation and labor market data for clearer signals on the timing of future rate adjustments.
