U.S.-Iran Negotiations Appear on Hold During Khamenei Funeral

Negotiations between the United States and Iran appear to be on pause as Iran holds funeral ceremonies for former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, which are scheduled to run until July 9. The funeral has become a symbolic display of national unity, with Iranian officials signaling that Tehran remains in no rush to resume negotiations and intends to strengthen its strategic position before returning to the negotiating table.

For markets, the key takeaway is that the ceasefire signed last month continues to support a decline in oil prices, helping ease inflation pressures. Lower energy costs have reduced expectations of further Federal Reserve rate hikes, providing support for gold through improving inflation dynamics and shifting interest rate expectations rather than renewed safe-haven demand. Investors will be watching closely for any signs that U.S.-Iran negotiations resume once the funeral concludes.

What Yesterday’s PMI Data Tells Us about the US Services Sector

The latest U.S. PMI data painted a mixed but broadly stable picture of the services sector. The S&P Global Services PMI edged down to 51.2 from 51.3, while the ISM Services PMI came in at 54.0, slightly below expectations but still indicating continued expansion in service-sector activity. Meanwhile, the ISM Services Prices Index eased to 67.7 from 71.3, suggesting that input cost pressures are gradually moderating despite remaining elevated. Overall, the data indicate that the U.S. services sector remains resilient while inflation pressures continue to cool, supporting expectations that the Federal Reserve is likely to maintain a patient approach to interest rate policy.
