US Treasury Increases Bond Buybacks, Supporting Gold

On Tuesday, a major sell-off in global bond markets pushed the 30-year US Treasury yield to its highest level since 2007, as investors grew increasingly concerned about a potential escalation of the US-Iran conflict and the deteriorating US fiscal outlook, with US government debt surpassing the $40 trillion threshold for the first time.

On Wednesday, the US Treasury announced that it will more than double the size of its buybacks for 10- to 30-year Treasury bonds, increasing the minimum amount from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation. The increased buyback size will take effect from September 9 through November 4.

The announcement triggered a sharp decline in 10- and 30-year Treasury yields, while the DXY also fell, indicating weakness in the US dollar. The decline in bond yields can be explained by the basic relationship between bond prices and yields: when bond demand increases, bond prices rise, while their yields fall.

By increasing its bond buybacks, the Treasury becomes a larger source of demand for existing long-term Treasury bonds. As more buyers compete for these bonds, their prices can rise, which in turn pushes yields lower. In simple terms:

US Treasury buybacks ↑ → Demand for bonds ↑ → Bond prices ↑ → Bond yields ↓

The decline in yields also provided a boost to gold, with gold gaining 3.07% following the announcement. Since gold does not generate interest or fixed income, lower bond yields reduce the opportunity cost of holding gold, making the precious metal relatively more attractive compared with interest-bearing assets such as government bonds.

With bond yields, the US dollar, and gold all reacting sharply to the announcement, markets will continue to watch whether the Treasury’s increased buyback program can provide further support to long-term Treasury prices and gold.

July FOMC Meeting Minutes Recap

The July FOMC meeting minutes, released today at 1:00 AM, showed that most Fed officials supported keeping the federal funds rate unchanged at 3.50%–3.75%, while three members favored a 25-basis-point hike. Officials continued to view inflation as elevated and noted that further policy tightening could be necessary if inflation fails to decline, making the minutes relatively hawkish. However, the overall economic and policy outlook remained largely unchanged from the June meeting, with policymakers continuing to wait for more data on inflation and the labor market. Despite the hawkish tone, gold continued to gain, as news that the U.S. Treasury was buying back long-term bonds appeared to have a stronger influence on gold prices than the FOMC minutes.
