Apache Helicopter Downing Triggers US-Iran Escalation

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East intensified overnight after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Iran had shot down an American Army Apache helicopter.

The incident prompted an immediate response from the United States, which launched strikes targeting Iranian air defense and radar installations near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important oil shipping routes.

According to U.S. Central Command, the strikes were carried out in direct response to the helicopter downing. Iran subsequently retaliated by launching missiles and drones toward U.S. military targets across the region, according to statements from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Gold prices extended their recent decline in reaction to the news, suggesting that investors remain focused on monetary policy expectations and inflation caused by the war. Meanwhile, oil prices moved higher as concerns over potential supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz increased. With both sides continuing to exchange military actions, traders will closely monitor developments for signs of further escalation that could impact global energy market..

Stronger-Than-Expected Existing Home Sales Reinforce Dollar Strength Ahead of CPI

Economic data released overnight showed that U.S. Existing Home Sales rose to 4.17 million, exceeding market expectations of 4.07 million. The stronger-than-expected result adds to a growing list of resilient U.S. economic indicators and further supports the narrative that the American economy remains relatively strong despite elevated interest rates.

The housing data follows last week’s Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) report, which also surprised to the upside and highlighted continued strength in the labor market. Together, these releases have helped support the U.S. dollar and reinforced expectations that the Federal Reserve may maintain its restrictive monetary policy stance for longer than previously anticipated.

Investor attention now turns to today’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, scheduled for release at 7:30 PM (GMT+7). The inflation data will be closely scrutinized for clues regarding the Fed’s next policy move. While markets currently expect the central bank to keep interest rates unchanged in the near term, persistent inflationary pressures could strengthen the case for rates to remain elevated for longer, with an additional rate hike as early as December if inflation proves more stubborn than expected, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.
