The latest US economic data provided a mixed picture, with inflation remaining elevated while economic activity continued to show resilience. The Core PCE Price Index, the Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of underlying inflation, came in line with expectations at 3.3% year-on-year and 0.2% month-on-month.
Meanwhile, Preliminary GDP growth for Q2 came in at 1.5%, matching forecasts but slowing from the previous reading of 2.1%. While the slowdown suggests some moderation in economic activity, growth remains positive and indicates that the US economy continues to demonstrate resilience.
However, headline PCE came in above expectations, with the monthly reading at 0.2% versus 0.1% forecast and the yearly reading at 3.7% versus 3.6% forecast. The stronger headline figure suggests that non-core components, including food and energy prices, contributed to the higher inflation reading in July.
Overall, the data reinforced concerns that inflation remains persistent despite some moderation in economic growth. This could reduce expectations for aggressive Fed rate cuts and support a higher-for-longer interest rate outlook, which is generally negative for gold.

Following the release, gold experienced significant volatility and at one point fell by around 0.78% as the stronger headline PCE reading supported the US dollar and pushed back against expectations for easier monetary policy, putting pressure on gold prices.
Meanwhile, the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium will take place from August 27–29, with Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh expected to speak on Friday. His remarks will be closely watched for signals on the Fed’s future monetary policy and interest-rate outlook. Any unexpectedly hawkish or dovish comments could lead to increased market volatility, particularly in the US dollar, Treasury yields, and gold.
