US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the Treasury’s bond buyback program could be larger than the $4 billion initially announced. However, his remarks do not confirm that the Treasury will increase the size of the upcoming buyback operation.
Bessent also said that current long-term Treasury yields do not fully reflect market fundamentals and highlighted weak liquidity, particularly in the 30-year Treasury bond. In other words, he believes part of the recent rise in long-term yields may be driven by market conditions rather than changes in the underlying economic outlook. When liquidity is weak, large trades can have a greater impact on bond prices, potentially causing yields to move more sharply than fundamentals alone would suggest.

However, the bond market appears to be showing some disagreement with this view. After long-term Treasury yields fell sharply following the announcement that the Treasury would double its buyback operations, yields gradually moved higher again yesterday. This suggests that investors may still view factors such as concern about a potential escalation of the US-Iran conflict and the deteriorating US fiscal outlook, with US government debt surpassing the $40 trillion threshold for the first time as important drivers of long-term yields.

Despite the recovery in bond yields, gold largely held onto its gains from the previous session. This may indicate that the broader factors supporting gold have not fundamentally changed. The US continues to face high levels of government debt issuance, while investors are also competing for capital across other areas of the market, including corporate debt issuance linked to the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence investment. At the same time, higher yields offered by other sovereign bond markets, such as Japan, may provide investors with additional alternatives. These factors, together with elevated term premiums—the additional compensation investors demand for holding longer-term government debt—continue to put pressure on the long-term Treasury market.
Traders should watch the Treasury’s upcoming buyback operations and any further comments from Treasury officials for signs that the program could be expanded beyond the currently announced amount. At the same time, the direction of long-term Treasury yields and term premiums will remain important for gold. A sustained decline in yields could provide further support for gold, while a continued rise could put pressure on prices if it reflects stronger expectations for inflation, economic growth, or higher-for-longer interest rates.
