Last night, Gold dropped below $4,000 for the first time since November 2025. Why is this happening? From a macro perspective, there are four main reasons:

  • Fed rate hike expectations are increasing
  • Strong US Dollar
  • US-Iran peace talks reducing safe-haven demand
  • Tech stock selloff triggering gold liquidation

Markets Are Pricing in an Earlier Fed Rate Hike

Before the FOMC meeting last week, the CME FedWatch Tool indicated that a rate hike was most likely in December this year. However, the latest FOMC meeting presented a hawkish Federal Reserve.

During his first FOMC meeting, Kevin Warsh acknowledged that inflation remains the biggest issue facing the United States. He stated, “Persistently high prices are a burden for the American people, but the recent past need not be prologue.” Additionally, the latest dot plot showed that 9 of the 18 officials attending the meeting favor at least one rate hike before the end of the year.

The bond market is also reflecting these concerns. The US 2-year Treasury yield reached 4.232% on June 22, its highest level since February 21, 2025, when it stood at 4.275%.

These developments are now being reflected in market expectations. According to the CME FedWatch Tool as of June 25, a rate hike to 3.75%-4.00% has become more likely than a rate hold at the September meeting.

The Bank of America (BofA) also expects three rate hikes totaling 75 basis points in 2026. Higher interest rates generally weigh on gold prices because gold is a non-yielding asset, making interest-bearing alternatives such as bonds more attractive.

Strong US Dollar

Following the Fed’s hawkish stance and rising Treasury yields, the US Dollar has strengthened considerably. The US Dollar Index (DXY) stood at 101.507 as of 10:37 AM (GMT+7) on June 25, 2026.

Since gold is priced in US Dollars, a stronger Dollar makes gold more expensive for foreign buyers, which generally puts downward pressure on gold prices.

US-Iran Peace Talks Reducing Safe-Haven Demand

Earlier this week, US Vice President JD Vance met with Iranian officials in Switzerland for technical talks aimed at ending the conflict. Key outcomes included a 60-day waiver on sanctions for Iranian oil exports and the release of approximately $12 billion in previously frozen Iranian assets.

However, major disagreements remain regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Iran maintains that it still has the right to impose tolls on vessels using the strait, while the United States is pushing for the complete removal of those tolls.

Despite these disagreements, traffic data suggests that shipping activity through the strait has increased, although it remains below pre-war levels. This indicates that the strait has partially reopened under restricted conditions.

Meanwhile, the US Senate has joined the House in voting to halt the Iran war, suggesting that President Trump may face significant political obstacles if he wishes to continue military operations.

Overall, these diplomatic developments have reduced geopolitical uncertainty and weakened demand for gold as a safe-haven asset.

Tech Stock Selloff Triggered Gold Liquidation

Technology stocks have fallen sharply since Tuesday as investors increasingly question whether the massive capital spending on Artificial Intelligence infrastructure will generate returns quickly enough to justify current valuations.

During periods of market stress, investors often liquidate profitable positions to raise cash and meet margin requirements. While gold is widely known as a safe-haven asset, it often falls during large cross-market selloffs because it serves as a source of liquidity.

As one of the best-performing assets over the past year, gold became a natural candidate for liquidation as investors sought to raise cash amid the technology-sector selloff. This additional selling pressure contributed to gold’s decline.

Gold Outlook

The overall macroeconomic backdrop remains bearish for gold. Markets are increasingly pricing in additional Federal Reserve rate hikes, Treasury yields remain elevated, the US Dollar is strengthening, and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have eased compared to recent weeks.

However, one potential bullish catalyst could emerge if the Strait of Hormuz fully reopens. A sustained normalization of shipping activity could reduce energy prices and ease inflationary pressures. Lower inflation would lessen the need for future rate hikes and could eventually revive expectations for rate cuts, creating a more favorable environment for gold.

For now, however, the market remains focused on rising rate expectations, a stronger US Dollar, and improving geopolitical conditions—all of which continue to weigh on gold prices.
