US JOLTs Job Openings: What’s More After the Friday’s Employment Report?

Despite the majority of job data pointing toward a weakness condition last week, tonight’s labor data might not result the same way or maybe it does? The projection reading has a higher than prior figure.

One way to look into tonight’s report is to look at each category listed in this report, including the number of hirings, separations, and job openings, which offers a broader understanding of the labor market conditions. 

  1. If the report shows that businesses are reluctant to hire replacements, then this indicates a pessimistic sentiment about the US economy.
  2. Regardless of how many job openings businesses are looking for, if the number of hirings is still low or stalls combined with the recent high unemployment rate, then this still does not mean a positive message for them as well. 
  3. Separated rate is also important, which indicates the number of layoffs, quits, discharges, and other separations. So a higher separation rate would also likely be equivalent to a higher unemployment rate.

Extra Information: 

Even Trump also brought out the possibility of a recession on Sunday. So there is a chance that this so-called “period of transition” may need to face a labor shortage or poor job market conditions in the near future.
