This report highlights key developments for the week ahead, providing investors with relevant context to support informed trading decisions. It covers both fundamental analysis—the primary drivers behind market movements—and technical analysis, including price action and key liquidity zones that traders should monitor.

Fundamental Analysis

Four factors to focus on this week from the fundamental side:

Last Week Recap – Economic Data

Last week’s U.S. economic data presented a mixed picture, with the labor market showing signs of weakness while inflationary pressures remained elevated. JOLTS job openings fell to 7.359 million, below the 7.440 million forecast, while ADP employment growth came in at just 44K versus 68K expected. The weakness culminated in Friday’s Nonfarm Payrolls, which unexpectedly fell by 23K versus the 85K forecast, while Average Hourly Earnings rose only 0.1% versus 0.3% expected, pointing to softer wage growth. However, the Unemployment Rate unexpectedly improved to 4.1% versus 4.2% expected, which may have limited the impact of the weaker NFP and wage data on rate-cut expectations. Meanwhile, ISM Manufacturing PMI remained strong at 55.6, while elevated ISM prices suggested persistent inflationary pressure. Overall, gold had a bullish week as markets scaled back bets that the Federal Reserve would raise rates next month, but its rally following the weak NFP was more limited than expected, likely because the lower unemployment rate provided some reassurance about labor-market conditions.

China’s Gold Purchases Reach Highest Monthly Increase Since 2023

China’s central bank continued to increase its gold reserves in July, purchasing 640,000 ounces—the largest monthly increase since October 2023, when holdings rose by 740,000 ounces. At the same time, Hong Kong launched a central gold clearing system and revived dollar-denominated gold futures trading, while exploring yuan-denominated gold futures. Hong Kong also plans to expand its gold storage capacity to more than 2,000 metric tons by 2030 and launched a programme with the Shanghai Gold Exchange to facilitate cross-border gold settlements. These initiatives form part of a broader effort by China and Hong Kong to strengthen the region’s role in global gold trading and encourage greater use of the yuan in international markets. Together with continued central bank purchases, these developments provided a supportive backdrop for gold last week and highlighted growing efforts to diversify away from the U.S. dollar.

This Week’s Economic Calendar Events – Inflation in Focus

This week, markets will closely watch the latest U.S. inflation data, with CPI on Wednesday and PPI on Thursday. Last month’s inflation data came in below expectations, suggesting that price pressures were cooling and potentially reducing expectations for higher interest rates. Therefore, this month’s CPI and PPI data will be important in determining whether the cooling inflation trend is continuing. If CPI and PPI come in above forecasts, persistent inflation could strengthen expectations for higher interest rates and put pressure on gold. Conversely, if both figures come in below expectations, signs of further cooling inflation could support expectations for lower interest rates and provide further support for gold. Retail sales and jobless claims will also provide additional insight into the strength of the U.S. economy, helping markets assess the outlook for monetary policy.

Strait of Hormuz Situation Remains Complicated as Iran Places New Demand for a Peace Deal

Last week, the US claimed that a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz was close, which helped lower oil prices, ease inflationary pressures, and support gold prices. However, the situation remains complicated as Iran is now demanding compensation for damages inflicted by the US and Israel as a precondition for reopening the strait. In response, Trump has demanded compensation from Iran for the lives lost during the conflict.

However, Iran and Oman seem to be making progress nearing a final pact on defining new shipping lanes between them through the Strait of Hormuz. Despite this, Iran has repeated that the US must meet its conditions.

Traders should closely monitor any further developments surrounding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, as a renewed escalation in the conflict could push oil prices higher and potentially put pressure on gold prices by increasing inflationary concerns.

Technical Analysis

XAU/USD Technical Outlook

  • Current Bias: Bullish (approaching potential exhaustion at Daily supply).
  • Overhead Resistance: 4426 serves as the primary distribution zone to monitor for short entries.
  • Reversal Pivot: $4332. A sustained break and market acceptance below this level confirms a structural trend shift to the downside.
  • Trade Plan (Swing): Wait for a confirmed structural breakdown below 4332 to execute short setups. Cross-reference all technical triggers with Wednesday’s CPI data release to ensure fundamental alignment before entering the market.
